the Portrait
In later days the painting was brought to Shri Nathji’s residence at Dehra Dun. All who saw it experienced the nearness of the divine. People could not take their eyes off it. Many sought to possess it.
An aggressive devotee of Shri Nathji, a certain Rameshwar Das, found a solitary moment with the painting, and took it off the wall. Much before anyone could stop him, he had run off into the street outside, hailed a tonga and climbed into it with the painting. However, his daring bid was foiled by other devotees present on the occasion who surrounded the tonga good-humouredly and persuaded Rameshwar Das to bring the portrait back to the darbaar. This act of the errant devotee only made him dearer to Shri Nathji’s heart.
