Amongst the many persons who began to acquire faith in Shri Nathji there was the famed Rai Bahadur Ugra Sen of Dehra Dun, who later became the Chairman of the Dehra Dun Municipality. He was so touched by R.R. Khanna’s devotion to Shri Nathji that he would say to Shri Nathji in a light vein:
Huzoor either give me the Divine Love you have given Khanna, or else I will quarrel with him!
Rai Bahadur Ugra Sen was afflicted by a disease of the ear that was making him more and more deaf. He once said to Shri Nathji:
At first I had complained that my prayers were not being heard, but now I am thankful. If my hearing had been restored I would have become a practicing barrister in court. But because I remained hard of hearing, I could not practice law. I turned to construction work instead – and practically constructed half of Dehra Dun! This was the work that the Divine Will had intended of me!
He would frequently say to Shri Nathji:
Mujh se do baar bolaa keejiye, main oonchaa suntaa hoon! Please speak to me twice, since I am hard of hearing! The hearing impairment has now become an advantage!
There was a time in 1934 when had he sent a sack of rice by train from Dehra Dun to Amritsar when Shri Nathji and Shri Babaji were residing there. However the sack was lost along the way and did not reach Shri Nathji. When Rai Bahadur Ugra Sen met Shri Nathji afterwards he said to him:
Nathji! Aapne Sudaamaa ke chaaval to chheen ke le liye thhe–magar mere chaaval to raaste men hee phinkvaa diye!
“O Nathji, as Lord Krishna, you had snatched the bag of rice that Sudaamaa offered you–but you had my sack of rice thrown out of the train! I am so unfortunate!
And Shri Nathji laughed: No, Rai Bahadur, your sack of rice was accepted even before it reached its destination!
Even though Shri Nathji consoled the Rai Bahadur, the fact was that Shri Nathji rarely, if ever, took any service from the rich and the powerful. It was a spiritual law that Shri Nathji had to reward materially as well as spiritually any person from whom he took any service of any kind.
Shri Nathji used to say: “The rich already have enough. Let me make the poor rich by accepting their services!”
Shri Nathji used to narrate how Lord Krishna accepted the bag of rice of his poor friend, Sudama, only so that he could give him a palace of gold in return.
Shri Nathji also spoke about the vanvaas of Lord Rama, his self-imposed banishment into the forests, which was part of his drama upon earth, so that he could give the poor people he met in the forests a chance to serve him.
Kewat, the boatman, took Lord Rama across a river only to be given the boon of salvation in return. Lord Rama said to Kewat:
“Kewat if I were not to take you across the bhav saagar I would not have sat in your boat! Your life of service to humanity as a boatman was so perfect that I had to choose your boat!”
