Shri Nathji used to recount the episode of the Rai Bahadur who came to see him at Lucknow. The movies had just given place to sound films known as Talkies” in India. The Rai Bahadur had travelled a large distance from Faizabad to Lucknow to see such a Talkie. He had also hoped to meet Shri Nathji in Lucknow, and he came to the house of Mr. R. R. Khanna.
I wish to see Shri Nathji, said the Rai Bahadur to Mr. R.R. Khanna.
His sermon is at six-o-clock in the evening, said Mr. Khanna, you will have to wait till then!
But I have to go to a Talkie at around that time, said the Rai Bahadur.
Either go to the Talkie or hear his Talk! said Mr. Khanna, you can’t do both!
The Rai Bahadur waited till the evening, hoping to secure Shri Nathji’s darshan, listen to a few words, and then leave for the Talkie. But, when Shri Nathji came before him and began talking, the Rai Bahadur so forgot himself that he sat there till late in the night, oblivious of worldly preoccupations.
Jab vo aayaa to gum gaye bas ham
Uske jalve men vo asar dekhaa.
When He came I lost myself
So great was the effulgence of His Glory
Rai Bahadur, said a sarcastic R.R. Khanna, forgive me, I must have ruined your plans for the Talkie this evening!
Mr. Khanna! Instead of saying that, why don’t you take my shoe and place it on my head! Where in the world can one obtain such bliss as I have obtained here!
The Rai Bahadur became greatly devoted to Shri Nathji thereafter and always sought an opportunity to come to him. The bliss that one obtained from the darshan and blessings of Shri Nathji could not be had in any attraction of the world.
