Priya Nath wished to send Shri Bahl to Lucknow with an important letter for the Chief Minister there, because unscrupulous elements in Mussoorie were trying to take over Savitri Nivas and were creating a reign of terror for the purpose.
He asked Shri Bahl to take leave from his office for a few days and go to Lucknow. However, Bahl declined to go because he said that he was very busy in his office during those days and would not get leave.
Priya Nath said to him: “What would you do if you had an accident? Would you not be forced to take leave from the office then?”
And that was exactly what happened. Shri Bahl had gone out with his driver on the crowded Delhi-Shahadra road. The car stopped along the way due to engine trouble. The driver told Bahl to sit in the driver’s seat while he pushed the car from behind. The car was on a slope on the road.
Bahl was not acquainted with car driving. His foot suddenly rammed against the accelerator and the car jumped forward with great speed, rushing down the road through the dense traffic. While the driver ran after him shouting at him to press the brake, Bahl kept on pressing down upon the accelerator in a state of panic.
A number of people stood in danger of coming under the wheels of the car. There was the possibility of collision with the trucks and buses going in all directions. Mr. Bahl shut his eyes and prayed to Shri Nathji.
Just then, it appeared to him as if Shri Nathji had wrenched the steering wheel from his hands. The car entered a small trough by the side of the road and came to a halt! Mr. Bahl escaped with a minor injury to his arm.
