In 1943, as the severe winter of Mussoorie approached and the nights became bitterly cold, Shri Nathji decided to leave Prince Hotel at Mussoorie and to move down. As Mateshwari would not hear of returning to Dehra Dun despite the conciliatory gestures of the inmates of the Dehra Dun house, Shri Nathji decided to go to Delhi instead.
Shri Nathji had this propensity for finding out a solution to even the most complex of problems. He would appear to be in full command of whatever situation came his way. Thus while on the one hand he allowed himself to be moved by the events around him and even exhibited his helplessness, yet there were other moments that revealed that even on the worldly plane as a human, Shri Nathji possessed incalculable wisdom and strength. Only he could have found a place to stay in Delhi at so short a notice.
He had written to a certain Krishnadutta family and they had warmly welcomed him to come and stay with them at their palatial house at 15 Barakhamba Road, New Delhi.
This was Shri Nathji’s first major tryst with New Delhi, which was the capitol of India. It was a city that was to be blessed by his presence so that in later days it would become the citadel of freedom as India became a republic.
It was at the house of Krishnadutta at New Delhi that Shri Nathji celebrated the birthday of Shri Babaji Maharaj, on January 21, 1944, as printed cards of that time show. No matter where Shri Nathji would be, he would always be punctilious in celebrating the birthday of Shri Babaji Maharaj, who he always regarded as his “temporal father and spiritual preceptor” and, in a greater sense, as God Himself.
