Shri Nathji gave many examples of genuine devotees straying from the path. Nature would reprimand them later and bring them back to the right path again.
Judas Iscariot, the man who betrayed Christ, was later said to have hanged himself in remorse.
Of what use his hanging himself? Mateshwari would say, it did not bring back Christ!
Peter, a staunch disciple of Christ, betrayed him, when he denied in court that he knew Christ.
Human failings were ever present, and nowhere were they so pronounced as when money was involved.
Shri Nathji would tell the story of Guru Gobind Singh, who was brought a piece of flesh from the leg of one of his disciples, as an expression of the man’s faith. Another disciple gave Guru Gobind Singh five hundred rupees. Guru Gobind Singh had words of praise for both of them, but he praised the man who gave him the five hundred rupees more than the man who gave his flesh.
Surely this man is more loyal because he has offered a piece of his flesh? said the others present.
Yes, he is loyal! He has offered a piece of his flesh. But the other has offered a piece of his heart! Money is more precious to people than their lives! replied the Sikh Guru.
How true were his words in the modern world! How often would money lead man to commit the greatest follies of life and to forsake God!
