It had already begun to snow by December 1955 that year. Shri Nathji called out to the boys and showed the snow to them and said it was one of the most glorious sights of Nature. He described the snow upon the earth as a layer of milk and cream and referred to the falling snow as puffs of cotton. The boys had never seen snow before, despite their years in Mussoorie. It was the first time that snow had fallen this early.
Shri Nathji used an old coal stove made of tin to warm up the verandah in the biting cold of the winter. One arm of the tin stove was pushed out of a broken glass of a window in the verandah, while the rest of the stove warmed the verandah. It was the only means of mass heating available. Shri Nathji and Mateshwari used electric heaters in their room and sometimes hot water bottles. They rarely sat by the fireplace in the boys’ room.
