Shri Nathji once gave a very simple proof of the existence of God. He said:
There is a room. No one knows whether there is anyone inside or not. People outside ask for various things. A man asks for an orange. And an orange is thrown out of the room. Another man asks for a mango, and a mango is thrown out of the room, and so on. Though the person inside the room remains hidden from the sight of those outside, his existence inside is proved by the things he throws outside in answer to the call of those outside.
“If, after that, the person inside chooses to remain silent even when people call out to him, that would not mean that he does not exist. It would only mean that he has chosen to remain silent.
“Similarly, God is invisible, but man can seek proof of His existence through prayer. When he starts getting an answer to his prayers he understands that there must be a God who is answering them. And even if God chooses not to answer at times, that would not mean that He did not exist. He exists, because it was He who had answered all the prayers earlier.
We prayed to Him, and we got no answer, many people would say.
And Shri Nathji would reply:
Perhaps your prayer was not genuine enough. Search your own hearts. Perhaps the prayer was not an agonising cry that could shatter the silence and reach the ears of God. Perhaps, there was not a yearning enough. All genuine prayers are answered by God!
“People complain that he does not give, but it His complaint that no one’s voice reaches Him!
“Log kaihte hain ke vo detaa naheen, magar usse shikaayat hai ke uss tak kisee ki aavaaz hee naheen pahunchti!
“If He does not answer a prayer, it is only because he knows what is for the betterment of man.
“A tailor cuts the cloth only to sew it. Perhaps the troubles in life are part of a design to make the soul more beautiful!”
Shri Nathji said:
If the troubles that come to you have come against the Will of God, then they cannot harm you, and you need not be afraid of them. And if they have come to you according to the Will of God, then they must be for your betterment, and they cannot harm you–so there is no need to be afraid! In both the states man is free of fear when he surrenders himself to the Divine Will.”
“Mussavur khench laa tasveer vo jis men dikhaayi ho,
Uddhar talvaar khenchi ho idhar gardan jhukaayi ho
O Artist, make thou a painting in which is shown,
A sword upraised on one side and the head bowed on the other”
