There was an urgent knocking at Shri Nathji’s bedroom window late one night at Darbhanga Castle.
Shri Chaman Lal Magoo, stood outside. He carried a dead child in his arms. For years he had prayed to Shri Nathji for a child. No sooner had a child been born than he had died. It was a great blow to him. Chaman Lal Magoo had come to Shri Nathji’s house, but instead of entering within, stood outside at the window, as he did not wish to come inside with a dead child in his arms.
He spoke to Shri Nathji from the window and asked Shri Nathji to bring the child back to life. But Shri Nathji did not do so. He spoke to his devotee for several minutes in the cold winter night, and brought peace to him.
Shri Nathji told Chaman Lal Magoo of the woman who went to Buddha with a dead child. And Buddha said:
I will bring the child back to life if you will bring a mustard seed from a house where no death has ever occurred!
The woman went in her quest, and returned after some time. She had no desire to have the child brought back to life. She had found not a single home where death had not occurred.
When Shri Chaman Lal Magoo left he was at absolute peace within. This was a greater miracle than if Shri Nathji had brought the child back to life. Chaman Lal Magoo had acquiesced in the Divine Will.
Shri Nathji said:
“It might be easy to bring a dead man back to life but it is very difficult to bring a dead heart back to life!
He would quote the following verse.

Afsurdaa dil ke vaaste kyaa chaandni kaa lutf
Liptaa parraa hai murdaa goyaa kafan ke saath

Of what use the glitter of moonlight to a heart that is dead–
It is like a body wrapped in a shroud.

Shri Nathji did more good in these solitary acts than entire organisations or societies acting together could have done, using all their resources. Social work could rehabilitate, educational institutions could inform the mind, hospitals could cure the sick–but all of these put together could not restore peace to the human soul. Only Shri Nathji could do this.
It was not only sorrow that Shri Nathji battled against, there was also the grim spectre of ego–of evil, pride, hatred, greed and lust–that resided within every human heart.
Rama killed one Ravana, but there is a Ravana within the heart of every person today, and I am seeking to destroy it. Krishna subdued the fearsome Kaali Naag, the monster snake, but there is a Kaali Naag in every human heart, and I have lept into the dark waters that exist there!
During his later years, Shri Nathji would frequently say with great loudness and power:
Either come before me as Vibheeshana, or else come before me as Ravana!
“Yaa to koyi mere saamne Vibheeshana bankar aaye aur yaa phir Ravana bankar aaye!”
And Shri Nathji would quote the words of Lord Krishna in the Geeta:

“ Paritraanaaya saadhunaam vinaashaaya cha dushkritaam!

The righteous shall receive protection, and the evil-doers shall be annihilated!”

But in Shri Nathji’s time it was not the sinner who would be annihilated. It would be sin.
Shri Nathji used to say:

Wipe out sin and there shall be no sinner left. But wipe out the sinner, and sin will rise again!
