Shri Nathji had engaged a night watchman for the house. He was a Gurkha with a large khaki felt hat, who carried a ‘khukri’ knife with him. He was supposed to be awake when everyone else in the house slept. Shri Nathji would hear him cough up to a certain time, and thereafter the coughing would cease.
Victor, too, was living with Shri Nathji during those days. He had resigned from his job at Delhi in May 1949 and had decided to stay with Shri Nathji permanently.
One night Victor stole the hat of the sleeping watchman and brought it before Shri Nathji. The night watchman was embarrassed and caught. If someone could steal his hat in the night, then surely he must not have been awake and on duty.
