Whenever Shri Nathji and Priya Nath were alone together in their bedroom Shri Nathji would be seen giving worldly advice to Priya Nath. Of the many things that Shri Nathji said there were a few that Priya Nath recorded in his daily diaries of the time.“Priyaji, Babaji kahaa karte thhe ke zyaadaa khoobsoorat auraten achhee naheen hoteen. Bahut se log unke peechhe parr jaate hain.“Piyaji, Babaji used to say that women, who were very beautiful, were not suitable because they had a host of persons after them.”“There was a time before my marriage when Sohan Singh came to me and said: ‘Huzoor, Savitri Devi, the daughter of Lala Hargopal Khanna, is not very beautiful.’“Peshaz vakt kabhi shaadi vivaah ki baat baahar naheen nikalne deni chahiye. Beesiyon log bhaanji maarne aa jaate hain!“Never speak of private matrimonial matters to others before time. There will be many who will come forward and try to create conflicts!”“There was a day at the time of my marriage proposal, when Devki Nandan Kasera was found standing outside my room with his ear glued to the door! It is said that the walls have ears. The Vazeer admitted that he had, and added:“Jis baat ko aap apne tak naheen rakh sake, usse main kaise apne tak rakh saktaa thhaa!”“When you could not keep the matter to yourself, then how could I be expected to keep it to myself!”Shri Nathji recounted how a great devotee like Mrs. Bahl could not control her feelings of antipathy towards a relative of hers, when she discovered that Shri Nathji might select the relative as a match for Pran Nath. She even went so far as to feign ignorance about her relative’s address.“Kuchh galtiyen to hamse binaa soche samjhe ho jaati hain, aur kuchh galtiyen to ham jaan boojh kar bhee karte hain!“There are some mistakes that we commit unknowingly and yet there are some that we commit intentionally!”Shri Nathji also recounted the attitude of Mrs. Khanna, the wife of R.R. Khanna, at the time that Shri Nathji and Mateshwari visited his house in Lucknow for the first time after Shri Nathji’s marriage: “Mrs. “Mrs. Khanna could not bear to see Mateshwari by my side. She beat her breasts with her hands in the style of mourning in the Punjab!”This was because the Khannas had hoped that their daughter would be selected by Shri Babaji Bhagwan to marry Shri Nathji. However, Shri Babaji Bhagwan had thought that Khanna’s daughters were too worldly-minded and therefore not suitable for Shri Nathji, and had chosen Savitri Devi instead.Shri Nathji would often say: ““We always have to suffer for our polite nature!”“Har ek ki salaah par naheen chalnaa chahiye! Log jaan boojh kar bhee galat salaah de dete hain!“Priyaji, yaad rakhnaa, duniyaan men koyi kissee ki khushi naheen dekh saktaa!“Priyaji, always remember, no one in the world can bear to see the happiness of another!”Shri Nathji narrated the story of the hunch-backed – ‘“Shri Nathji also said: “Never speak of your troubles before others. Instead of being sympathetic, they become emboldened and arrogant, and try to take advantage of the situation.”“Seyaa bakhti men apnaa saayaa bhi saatth chhorr detaa hai! “In hard times even one’s shadow deserts oneself!”Shri Nathji also said: “Maine dekhaa hai ke jab bhee kissee bhakt ko zyaadaa bolne diyaa jaaye vo ussee vakt be-adab hone lagtaa hai!”“It is my experience that whenever I allow a devotee to talk too much he invariably ends up becoming irrerevent!Shri Nathji would also say that those who came very close to him and were around him all the time, often lost sight of his divinity. Human nature was such that it took for granted what was easily available and forgot its worth. Shri Nathji would quote the Hindi adage on this theme:“Ghar kaa jogi joganaa, anya gaanv kaa siddh!“A saint at home is of no consequence, but those that are from outside are considered enlightened!”On a more mundane note, Shri Nathji would quote the saying: “Shri Babaji Maharaj would be rightly disillusioned with people, but at the same time he would also add:‘Betaa, log hee aise hai. Ek ko nikaalo doosraa uss se bhee barrh kar aa jaayegaa!‘Son, all people are alike. Throw out one, and the next one who comes will be even worse than him!’”“Barre miyaan to barre miyaan, chhote miyaan subhaan AllahShri Nathji would also tell Priya Nath that Shri Babaji Maharaj would say to him:“Betaa kabhi kissee ke“Son, never speak from anyone else’s platform. Horses are best sold in their own stables!”Shri Nathji would say to Priya Nath:“Jo log sewaa naheen karte vo samajhte hain ke vo naheen karte, magar asli baat to ye hai ke unki sewaa Bhagwan ko manzoor naheen hoti! Kyonki jiski sewaa Bhagwan lete hain usse phal denaa parrtaa hai–aur ye log iss laayak naheen hote!”“Those people who don’t do any service think that it is they who are not doing it, but the fact is that their service is not wanted by God! God has to give a reward to anyone who serves Him, and these people are not worthy of such a reward!”When Priya Nath would complain to Shri Nathji about those devotees who absented themselves frequently from the darbaar Shri Nathji explained how he had said to the devotees once:“Yahaan aane kaa koyi faayedaa hai ke naheen? Aur agar hai, to naa aane kaa utnaa hee nuksaan huaa!“Is there any benefit in coming here? And if so, then the loss of not coming is equally great!”Shri Nathji was voicing a spiritual truth with mathematical accuracy. People who came to him got his blessings which brought them peace and prosperity and freed them of their sorrows and sufferings. Those who did not come were left bereft of all these benefits.“Baooji lambe baalon vale logon ko naheenBaooji f a person came before Shri Nathji wearing a small cap with a large head, Shri Nathji would say to Priya Nath: “Aise lagtaa thhaa jaise oontth ke mooh men jeeraa!Shri Nathji also recollected the words of Qaddar, the servant of Maharaja Sarila, who had said to Shri Nathji: “Ye aashiquee log barre khatarnaak hote hain! People who have the lover’s streak in them can be very dangerous!”“Rann, Raul te Munde,“Women, Astrologers and Boys,There was the servant, Brij Mohan, in Shri Nathji’s home in Delhi in 1973 who had been found writing letters to a devotee’s daughter in Nagpur. When he was restrained from doing this, he turned revengeful and tried to put ‘dhatooraa’, a poisonous substance in Shri Nathji’s food.“Kam milne se zyaadaa asar banaa raihtaa hai! Zyaada milne se tarah tarah ki baaten nikalne lagti hain!“The less frequently one meets people the greater the impact on them. Frequent meetings always lead to various kinds of disagreements.“Ranj ki jab gooftagoo hone lagti hai“When serious debate leads to argumentShri Nathji had often said to Priya Nath:“Priyaji, parrosi se hameshaan banaa ke rakhni chahiye! Kahaavat hai, ‘Paas kaa kuttaa door ke bhaayi se zyaadaa mufeed hotaa hai!“Priyaji, one must always live in peace with one’s neighbours! It is said that a dog close- by is more useful than a brother who is far away!”Shri Nathji would also quote the sayings that Shri Babaji Used:“Jamaat ki karaamaat hoti hai!”“Numbers can do miracles!” referring to a large number of friends who can be of help at a time of crisis. “Karaamaat se zyaada mulaakaat kaam aati hai!“A friendly disposition counts more than miracles!” Indeed, when it came to getting one’s tasks done, friendships could help more than miracles.“Priyaji, sun sab ki leni chahiye, par karnaa vohi chahiye jo kud ttheek lage!“Priyaji, you can listen to the advice of others, but you must always do that which you think is right!”“Priyaji, kissee ki salaah par naheen chalnaa chahiye! “Priyaji, never blindly follow the advice of another!”“Priyaji, aap se kabhi galti naheen ho sakti!“Priyaji, you can never make a mistake!”Shri Nathji would also amuse Priya Nath with legends of the past. He would speak of a shopkeeper by the name of Rallaa in the Punjab who gave wise counsel on legal matters to everyone in the town, and most often he was right. People said about him: ““Andar paagal, baahar paagal, saari duniyaan bilkul paagal! Sab men Abdul Kareem siyaanaa!“Madmen inside, and madmen without, the entire world is full of people who are mad. There is but one who is wise – and that is Abdul Kareem!”Shri Nathji also spoke of the inherent ego in people which made them feel important and hard to get, whenever they were overly praised or favours were asked of them:“Logon ki zyaadaa taareef karo to vo bhaaron par parrne lagte hain! “If you praise people too much they become puffed up with a sense of their own importance!“Bandar se kissee ne kahaa tumhaari tatti chahiye, to Bandar bolaa: ‘Ab to ham pahaarron par hagaa karenge!’“A monkey was asked for his excreta, and the monkey replied: ‘Now I shall relieve myself only on mountain tops!’”Shri Nathji also told Priya Nath how difficult it was for lawyers to earn money. He said: “Piyaji, kaprre hameshaan jhaarrr kar paihanne chahiyen!”Shri Nathji would always say: “Mangal ko baal naheen kataate! Haircuts are not supposed to be taken on Tuesdays!
