September 13, 1988, Tuesday, is a virtual horror for Priya Nath. It is one of the worst possible days in a long, long time.“Pataa naheen kyaa ho rahaa hai! Baayaan haathh jhootaa saa parr rahaa hai! Saaraa shareer jhootaa saa parr rahaa hai!“I don’t know what is happening. My left hand is becoming numb. It appears as if the entire body is becoming lifeless!”Priya Nath is shocked beyond measure, and prays feverishly while massaging Shri Nathji’s arm and asking him if there is any improvement.“There is a feeling of weakness and also of faintness or unconsciousness –The feeling persisted for a long time from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. In-between Priya Nath took Shri Nathji’s Blood Pressure and found it to be very, very low for him i.e. 120/50!! He wonders whether this could be due to the large diuretic effect of the biochemic medicines, and the sudden salt reduction.“This was a great warning to me. I should finish all the tasks allotted to me. Shri Nathji had been doing everything except wasting time. He had been writing as arduously as before, he had been making fascinating recordings lasting over 1½ hours each and had been speaking for hours to people – Palshikar being the latest, to whom he had spoken for about an hour in a very loud voice. Maybe all this effort had taken its toll. Also, his Blood Pressure had been behaving very strangely these days and was on the low side, usually 130/60, instead of his usual 160/60.“YE ASURI BAL KAA SAB SE ZABARDAST ATTACK THHAA. BILKUL CHAMATKAAR SE MAIN BACH GAYAA!Priya Nath is horrified to hear these words and prays earnestly that such a thing never repeat itself. What agony, what torment, the dear, delicate, soft body would have undergone at the age of 86 at this attack is hard to imagine. “There is nothing to worry about. Everything is all right. Except for the irregular pulse – these irregular extrasystoles don’t look good at all.”Ramesh Sharma has arrived by that time and Priya Nath sends him in a taxi to Dr. Bhatia’s home at Vasant Kunj to get the ECG evaluated. Ramesh Sharma returns with a note from Dr. Bhatia on which is written:ADVISED ADMISSION FOR EVALUATION AND TREATMENT. REQUIRES CCU ADMISSION Hypertension. PVC/V.T. “THE IRREGULARITY IN SHRI NATHJI’S PULSE IS TOO MUCH. SHRI NATHJI’S LIFE IS IN DANGER, AS THE HEART CAN STOP ANYTIME DUE TO THE IRREGULARITY. THE ATTACK THIS MORNING WAS DUE TO THE IRREGULAR PULSE!”It is one of the most shocking news to Priya Nath ever since Shri Nathji’s heart attack in January 1985. Priya Nath breaks the news to Shri Nathji–and later curses himself for doing so. “Ttheek to feel kar rahaa hoon, paihle ki tarah! Aise hee false alarm thhaa!“I am feeling all right, as I have always felt before. The whole thing was a false alarm.”When Priya Nath mentions hospitalization as suggested by Dr. Bhatia, Shri Nathji says:“Naheen! Naheen! “No! No! Why a hospital? I am feeling all right!”He dismisses outright the suggestion to go to a Hospital.“Agar aapko kuchh ho gayaa to ham ne zindaa naheen raihnaa.“If anything happens to you I will not remain alive.”Moments later he realises that he should not have said that, as it would only make Shri Nathji conceal his symptoms from him. Also it could have caused Shri Nathji further alarm, which could make the pulse even more irregular.“Perfectly normal feeling hai!Priya Nath embraces Shri Nathji and kisses his hands and feet, telling him again to use his spiritual power to get completely well.“Main bilkul ttheek hoon!“I am completely all right! “Itni fikar mat karo!“Don’t worry so much!”
