Shri Nathji is very anxious that the two old cars that stand in the driveway of the house be polished. One of the cars is a British Standard Car made in 1947, and the other car is an American V8 Ford, also made in 1947. The cars have not been run since years, and rest on raised blocks of bricks. Shri Nathji used to say that the cars were almost alive. “I used to see the cars standing outside in the open, in the house known as Pleasance on Charleville Road. No other car could have withstood such bad weather and yet not have been affected. The moment your driver came to start them, they would start immediately: ‘Phurr kar ke chal parrti theen!’”Shri Nathji is keen that the cars be polished before Dr. Winick arrives, and asks Priya Nath: “Piyaji, motoren Shri Nathji recollects the words of Sardar Pritam Singh who had visited him in the years past and suggested that he be given a chance to look after the cars, saying: “They will rot away with rust, otherwise.” “Tabhee Pritam Singh kaihtaa thaa sab chaurr ho jaayengi caaren!”Shri Nathji’s neck is stiff, perhaps from his stooping posture while writing in bed, or perhaps from the cold weather. Priya Nath massages Shri Nathji’s shoulders and neck until Shri Nathji tells him in just a few minutes: “Wah! Piyaji! Kamaal ka dabaaya, Sab swiftness door ho gayi! Ab bas karte. Kaheen thhak naa jaana!
