Sudha, who had been attending to the kitchen, falls ill, and Priya Nath does the cooking for a short while. He knows very little about cooking and can at best make a dish of boiled potatoes or daal, pulses, or some paneer-cottage cheese, which he gives with toast to Shri Nathji. “Priyaji ke haath men bahut ras hai!”“Priyaji’s cooking carries a great flavour!”Shri Nathji had always praised Priya Nath’s cooking and always appeared well when Priya Nath cooked. This may have been due to the pent-up prayers in Priya Nath’s mind that Shri Nathji remain forever well. The flavour that Shri Nathji found in Priya Nath’s cooking may have been the yearning of Priya Nath’s soul that Shri Nathji never fall ill.“Priyaji ke khaane men vo svaad hai ke log ungliyaan chaat kar khaate thhe!“The cooking of Priya Nath is so tasty that people virtually had to lick their fingers while eating.”Priya Nath had cooked for Shri Nathji during 1975 and 1976, at Musoorie, when Shri Nathji had fallen very ill from a stomach ailment, caused by a devotee with a restless mind who was doing the cooking at the time. For months Shri Nathji ate Priya Nath’s cooking until he recovered completely. “Khaana yaa to Brahmin ke haath kaa khaanaa chaahiye, yaa Maa ke haath kaa, aisaa log kaihte hain.“One must eat either from the hands of a Brahmin or one’s mother, it has been said.” Shri Nathji also added: “Any food that is cooked by a person whose mind is not at rest turns into poison!”This statement greatly frightened Priya Nath who had placed great reliance even on servants in the past.
