In Mussoorie itself, Shri Nathji’s health appeared to be deteriorating. And this was because his diet was not being attended to with care. Servants and cooks took up a large part of Shri Nathji’s time. For Shri Nathji, all men were alike, and his time meant to be given freely to all.
There was Shri Durga Das Khosla, the retired postmaster from Hoshiarpur, who had resolved to dedicate the rest of his life to serving Shri Nathji, and who had begun to cook for Shri Nathji at Savitri Nivas. He would don a long underwear and spend his whole day in the kitchen taking his duties there as the highest of spiritual disciplines.
The amount of peace and bliss he derived from cooking for Shri Nathji was indescribable. Indeed not every man in the world could have the privilege of feeding God; and those who were allowed this privilege were especially blessed. It was Durga Das Khosla who had said to Shri Nathji:
“When I am living with you I am in heaven, but when I go back to the world I feel as if I am in hell!”
He had two daughters, Swarna and Usha, whose marriages had appeared an impossibility since a long time.
No sooner had he begun to cook for Shri Nathji, when suitable proposals came for his daughters and they were thereafter happily married. It was as if the father’s earnings had gone to his family members as well.
