There was a time when Gopal Kasera, the younger brother of Shyam Lal Kasera, who had been wishing to leave, left Shadi Bhavan ever so silently without telling anyone, causing great anxiety to Shri Nathji and Mateshwari.
Although he sent a letter of apology at once from Hathras and even came back to Shri Nathji in later days, yet it illustrated to Shri Nathji more vividly than ever that there were devotees who did not feel themselves bound to stay with him. They could leave whenever they wanted to. This was in sharp contrast to their obligations to their businesses, offices and homes. They would never abscond from any of these duties for fear of the consequences. But they did so with impunity from the darbaar of Shri Nathji even though they genuinely and sincerely considered him to be God upon earth. This was because they knew that he would forgive them.
Shyam Lal Kasera once said to Shri Nathji: “O Lord! You are so forgiving that you overlook all our faults! However we are so ungrateful that instead of not committing any further mistakes we do so with re-doubled zest!”
Shri Nathji would frequently say: “A man will not steal if a child is present in the room because he is afraid the child will become a witness. However he will dare to steal when no one is in the room – forgetting that God is present and is watching all his actions. It is thus that man sins even though he knows there is an invisible God who is present everywhere like the air, and who is watching every little thing that he does!”
Shri Nathji would often say: “Shri Babaji Maharaj knew of the fickle-mindedness of devotees and he was very concerned for me. He knew that the devotees had no obligation whatsoever to stay with me and could leave at any time. That was the reason why he urged me to get married so that I would have someone to look after me all the time. Mateshwari has taken upon herself the duty of doing that twenty-four hours of the day.”
When Mateshwari saw how devotees simply disappeared after Shri Nathji had listened to their prayers and given them whatever they wanted in life, she said laughingly to Shri Nathji:
“ Aap ne jiss jiss kee maani vo bhag gayaa! Meri ek na maani varnaa main bhee bhag gayi hoti!
“Every person, whose prayers you heard, ran away! You did not listen to a single prayer of mine, or else I too may have run away!”
