After Shri Nathji had returned to Mussoorie in April 1947, he settled down to his daily routine at Shadi Bhavan.
During the days that Shri Nathji had been at Lahore, from December 1946 to March 1947, Sardar Basant Singh had dutifully remained behind at the Dehra Dun house of Shri Nathji, presumably because Prem Nath had been in need of his services. Prem Nath would never hesitate to call for Shri Nathji’s attendants whenever he needed help at home. There was even a time when he had sent a telegram to Shri Nathji at Shadi Bhavan asking him to send down the frail Mannu Lal.
When Shri Nathji was at Shadi Bhavan in April 1947, Sardar Basant Singh had come to live with him. News arrived from the home of Basant Singh that his father, who had been a granthi at Faridkot, had passed away.
Shri Nathji knew the difficulties that he and Mateshwari would have to endure after the going away of Basant Singh, who was the only attendant who lived with them 24 hours of the day and served them in every possible way. He acted as a secretary to Shri Nathji, looked after the children, cooked in the kitchen, and was a great help to Mateshwari as well.
Basant Singh had been living with Shri Nathji from 1928, ever since the days of Shri Babaji Maharaj. Indeed Basant Singh was indispensable and irreplaceable in Shri Nathji’s household. But Shri Nathji was more concerned for Basant Singh’s family and he took the decision to send him back to his hometown at Faridkot.
