It was one of the most unusual occurrences in history. Here was Shri Nathji being referred to as God, and being worshipped as God Incarnate by thousands of people, and yet there was never a word of dissent, never a voice of opposition, and not a trace of antagonism in the heart of even one person in the world.
Even his worst detractors were converted to him the moment they came before him, or the moment they beheld his portrait. His Divine Love was so great that it reached out into the very depths of the human soul and brought about a recognition from within.
Those who sang his praises were neither ridiculed nor persecuted, but on the contrary were held in reverence. Others wished that they too be granted such a faith.
The lives of Shri Nathji’s devotees made the people of the world wonder. Here were people living in the world, totally immersed in their worldly tasks and prospering in them, and yet having the greatest possible peace and bliss in their hearts, which was only attainable on earth through their faith in Shri Nathji.
The thought of salvation or moksha did not even come to them, because they were in a state of perpetual salvation in the thought of Shri Nathji.
Troubles came to them as they did upon the rest of the world, but they passed through them with equanimity, accepting everything that came their way as the Will of Shri Nathji. It was a state that was the envy of many saints and sages who had to withdraw into seclusion to seek peace and communion with God.
Shri Nathji would often say to his devotees:
“Auron kaa dhyaan to Bhagwan men lagaaye naheen lagtaa, magar mere bhagton kaa dhyaan to hataaye naheen hat taa!
“Others may find it difficult to concentrate their thoughts upon God, but my devotees find it difficult to take their thoughts away from me! It is a perpetual meditation that is with them–eating, drinking, working, sleeping, doing their chores in life, they remain merged in me.”
Shri Kulkarni had another episode to relate of the time he was with Shri Nathji listening to his sermon. He had an important court case that morning in which he had to give his final arguments. However, he became so merged in Shri Nathji’s words that he lost all consciousness of time and sat before Shri Nathji for a very long time. By the time he reached court, he discovered that his case had been dispensed with by the judge.
He rushed into the chambers of the judge and apologised to him for being late, and prayed that the judge list his case after lunch for arguments. The judge looked at Shri Kulkarni with a puzzled frown, and said:
“Mr. Kulkarni, aap hosh men to hain? Mr. Kulkarni are you in your proper senses? You just argued your case before me for one hour!”
Kulkarni was astounded. He knew then what had happened. While he had been sitting before Shri Nathji, Shri Nathji had come to the courtroom in the form of Kulkarni and argued his case for him! The incident left so strong an imprint on the mind of Kulkarni that his faith in Shri Nathji became unshakeable. It was a faith that was to remain with him right up to the last moments of his life, which was what he had prayed for.
