Shri Nathji often said that even the worst sinner could turn into a saint if he repented. Shri Nathji had told a very beautiful parable in his famous Hindi book: Atma Vijaya, Victory over Self, in which Naarad, the sage, asked God to show him the greatest sinner on earth. God pointed to a man, walking in a certain area. Then Naarad asked God to show him the greatest saint in the world, and God said: “Wait till tomorrow.”“Listen, O Naarad! This man came home in the night and sat down to eat. He had ill-treated his wife like no one could! He had not spoken to her for years. That evening his wife tried very hard to get him to speak to her, and he finally spoke to her.‘Which is larger – the river or the ocean?’ She asked her husband.‘The ocean.’ Her husband replied.‘And what is larger than the ocean?’‘The sky’ replied the man.‘And what is greater than the sky?’ she asked again.Suddenly something happened to the man. His eyes opened wide. He let out a cry and hit his forehead against the ground. A torrent of tears began streaming from his eyes.‘Greater than the sky–are my sins!’ he said in an agonized cry, ‘greater than the sky are my sins!’When someone asked Shri Nathji:“Does not this violate the Law of Karma which says a man must suffer for his sins in this life or the next? How can he be let off so easily on the basis of repentence alone? Is it not unjust?”Shri Nathji said: “It would be unjust if it were a law meant only for one person or a few. But it is a universal law, and a part of the Justice of God. “There is sufficient suffering in a short period in the agony of repentence to equal years of suffering in hell! And therefore the Law of Repentence does not violate the Law of Karma.”
