Shri Nathji used to say:Firstly: When the prayers are not genuine.Secondly: When you are asking for the wrong thing–like a child asking for ice-cream in fever.Thirdly: When He wishes to give you something better than you asked for.Fourthly: When He wishes to give at the appropriate time–and we do not have the patience to wait!”Shri Nathji had given a beautiful illustration of this theme:“I invite you to my house to come and have dinner with me at 9 p.m. You come and sit in the drawing room, but there is no sign of me or the food. You wait for a long time and then you decide to leave because you think that I probably do not wish to give you the dinner. Just as you are about to get up and go, I walk into the room and say: ‘Stop! Don’t go! The delay had occurred, because instead of a simple meal of ‘daal’ and ‘roti’ I was preparing an elaborate meal of tasty dishes–halwaa, poori, etc!”Shri Nathji’s examples and parables simplified even the greatest of truths so that even chidren could understand them, along with the intellectuals.
