Priya Nath’s Birthday on October 7, 1992, was celebrated, albeit on a mild note, at Savitri Nivas. Priya Nath knew that it would have been Shri Nathji’s wish that the birthday be definitely celebrated. He had celebrated October 7 every year, even in the worst phases of his own illness at Delhi. “What was it that Pitaji used to say?Priya Nath could hear Shri Nathji’s voice in his heart and see Shri Nathji patting him on his back, even as He embraced him with the ever-loving words in his dearest of all voices:“A happy, happy, birthday to you – may you live long! May you live long! May you, Bhayya and I live long! May this birthday bring joy to the whole world…”FOR PRIYA NATH THIS WAS THE SADDEST BIRTHDAY EVER SINCE THE DAY HE WAS BORN. IT WAS HIS FIRST BIRTHDAY WITHOUT SHRI NATHJI.Priya Nath had been born in Plevna Cottage in 1941 at Mussoorie, which was close to the Mosque in Kulri Bazaar. The Cottage was next to Roxy Building and beneath the Skating Rink.“Oh, he is simply wonderful!”Shri Nathji also narrated how His Mother, Jagatmataji, had come all the way to Mussoorie from Dehra Dun, at the time and had been overjoyed on seeing Priya Nath, saying:“Ye Babaji phir aa gaye! Inki zubaan kitni lambi hai. In jaisaa bolne vaala koyi naheen hoga! Inki jeebah par to swaiyam Saraswati kaa nivaas hai!“He is Babaji come again! Look at the long tongue he has. There shall be no greater speaker than him. The goddess of learning, Saraswati, herself, resides on his tongue!”Shri Nathji recalled how Jagatmataji would fondly tell people in Mussoorie:“Main Nathji ki Maa hoon!”“I am Nathji’s mother!”From 1941 to 1992 Shri Nathji had punctiliously observed Priya Nath’s birthdays. Up to 1958 these birthdays had come at Mussoorie. Priya Nath recalled how Shri Nathji would step out of the house alone in the cold Autumn evenings of October 7, and bring home presents, toys, and diaries for Priya Nath. In later years, these presents took the shape of expensive novelties or clothes. “Hazaaron saal jeeyo aur sab khushiyaan manaao tum,“May you live for thousands of years and be filled with joy,This ghazal of October 7, 1981, was played every year thereafter on Priya Nath’s birthdays before the devotees. “Mere aasheervaad len,Fortunately, this last birthday celebrated by Shri Nathji was preserved on video film.
