One of the first things that Shri Nathji did upon his return to Mussoorie in March 1950 was to change the name of his residence from St. Andrews to Savitri Nivas – the abode of Savitri. Shri Nathji had made an application to the Municipal Board for a change of name for the property a long time ago, but was faced with the usual bureaucratic delays that plagued the life of all citizens of the land.
Although the name St. Andrews was pleasing to Shri Nathji yet it was a foreign name and people could not relate to the name or understand why the house was named thus. Its name had once been changed from St. Andrews to Hari Kunj Estate by the earlier owner of the property, Sahu Jagdish Prasad, before Shri Nathji.
However Shri Nathji had preferred the name of St. Andrews to that of Hari Kunj Estate.
He had finally decided upon the name
“ Savitri Nivas” which carried the name of Mateshwari. The place was to be known as Savitri Nivas in the years to come and all who heard of it would immediately associate it with Mateshwari Savitri Devi. All the devotees were pleasantly surprised at this change of name. It had now become the abode of the Divine Mother. It was now a living Temple where God lived in the form of Shri Nathji along with his Shakti.
A board was placed outside the verandah of the house, on which was painted in white, over a black background, the name of Mateshwari as well as the new name of the house and the date when it was purchased by Mateshwari.
