The assembly of seekers after truth, genuine lovers of God, thirsty souls, the congregation of men, women and children, where the rich and the poor sat side by side, where the highest of intellectuals mingled with the illiterates, where the greatest of sadhus, mahatmas and pandits mingled with agnostics and scientists – formed the Divine Court of Shri Nathji, his darbaar. The divine atmosphere of the darbaar was such as to elevate the human soul to higher regions. This was so, because in Shri Nathji’s darbaar people felt the living presence of God.
Shri Nathji and Shri Babaji Maharaj were very fond of spiritual music. Mystic qawwaalis would always be a part of the divine atmosphere. The musicians, qawwaals, would be specially selected, and often were greatly devoted to Shri Nathji. Shri Nathji’s darbaar at Lahore saw numerous qawwaali singers present themselves. Whenever these singers of mystical verses would come before Shri Nathji they would be filled with a divine intoxication and sing with a fervour they themselves had not experienced earlier. Many lost themselves in a world of intoxication. The divine beauty of Shri Nathji and Shri Babaji Maharaj combined together was so great that few people could retain their consciousness.
The verses of the qawwaals were spiritual, often sung and composed as a homage to Shri Nathji’s divine beauty. Of the numerous qawwaals that came to Shri Nathji, there was one Nazar Qawwaal in Lahore. He would sing the following verse:
Nakaab ko be nakaab kar de
Hijaab ko be hijaab kar de
Kasam hai masoomiyon kee tujhko.
Nizaame fitrat kharaab kar de.
Lift up the veil from thy face
And appear before us unveiled!
We swear by the innocents
Come and change the face of Existence itself!
Nazar Qawwaal was later to become a renowned singer of qawwaalis. He was a poor man when he came to Shri Nathji’s darbaar, but became rich, spiritually and materially, both, afterwards. This happened in the case of many qawwaals who sang in Shri Nathji’s darbaar. They were unknown names in music when they came to Shri Nathji, but became famous soon after. It was the divine aura around Shri Nathji that gave something to everyone.
