Once Shri Nathji said: You can tell a lie almost anywhere and before anyone you like. You can lie before your parents, family members, friends, in courts, in places of worship, etc. But there is one place where you cannot tell a lie –and that is before your inner self! The moment you try to tell a lie to yourself your inner being laughs and says: ‘Who are you lying before? Your own self, which is aware of even the innermost recesses of your thoughts?’ Therefore if you cannot lie before your own soul, how can you lie before God who is the Soul of your soul and is within the depths of your heart? If you can imagine God watching all your actions at all times you will never do anything wrong!
Shri Nathji also gave the following example: “You will never steal from a room if even a child is present there. This is so because you will be afraid that the child will be a witness to your action. But if no one is in the room you might be tempted to steal. But, tell me, even when there is no one else in the room isn’t God present there? If you cannot steal in front of a child how can you steal in front of God! The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom!”
