During those early days, in the late 1930’s and the early 1940’s, Shri G. P. Bhutt resided in the regions of C. P. (Central Provinces) later known as Madhya Pradesh. Raipur, Betul, Chandrapur, and Jabalpur were frequently his places of residence. He had desired very intensely that he be close to Shri Nathji. But this appeared an impossibility, because Shri Nathji was in Northern India while Bhutt was hundreds of miles away in Central India.
Mr. Bhutt visited Shri Nathji during the Christmas holidays in December 1944, when Shri Nathji was at Lahore, and Mr. Bhutt was an Additional District Judge at Betul, then in the Central Provinces in India.
Bhutt came to Lahore specially to pray to Shri Nathji to bring him close to himself so that he could have the chance of serving him. Having found God upon earth, Bhutt had decided that he had to dedicate his life and work to him.
He had brought with him ten other persons, amongst which was a friend of his, a certain Khaskalam, who was a public prosecutor at Betul. The latter had lost his bedroll somewhere in transit. Those were the days when Shri Nathji was married and was staying in the house of Mateshwari’s father at 166, Anarkali, Lahore. Mateshwari gave fresh bedding to Khaskalam for his use in the Dharamsaala, where he was staying.
How fortunate we would have been, if we had lost our beddings as well, said the other devotees who had accompanied him from Betul, we too would have got fresh beddings from the Divine Mother’s home!
As Shri Nathji’s fountain of spirituality began to shower upon his visitors, Bhutt Sahib noticed, much to his dismay, that his friend Khaskalam, was not receiving any inspiration.
The moment Shri Nathji would send out his divine waves towards him, these would be returned, unaccepted.
Finally, Shri Nathji called Khaskalam to himself and placed his hand upon his back. Instantly, an inner light flooded his soul. His worldly pride disappeared, and he prostrated himself at Shri Nathji’s feet.
Bhutt Sahib heaved a sigh of relief. He turned to Shri Nathji and said: I was becoming faint with the thought that my friend was getting nothing, but you finally gave him your Grace!
And Khaskalam said: I am leaving your darbaar taking God with me!
After he had returned home to Betul, he wrote a letter to Shri Nathji:
Imagine my surprise on returning home and discovering that my bedroll had been sent here! I worried about it for nothing! If only you had blessed me as much as you did my missing bedroll, I would have attained salvation, my boat would have reached shore!
And Shri Nathji wrote to him:
Khaskalam, you must have been blessed first, which is why your bedroll received attention!
Shri Nathji was fond of narrating this incident in his sermons. It brought out amply God’s care for his children on earth. Even the smallest details in a man’s life are looked after by God when once He has chosen to give Himself.
In 1973, and again in 1978, when the train carrying Shri Nathji from Delhi to Nagpur passed through Betul railway station, Shri Nathji raised his hands in the air and blessed the soul of Khaskalam, who was no longer in the world. Shri Nathji never forgot his devotees, in life or in death.
