At the time that Bhutt had visited Shri Nathji at Lahore in December 1944 he had prayed with great earnestness to Shri Nathji to call him close to himself so that he could serve Shri Nathji.
Shri Nathji lived in Northern India, in Mussoorie and Lahore, while Bhutt was hundreds of miles away in Central India.
But the impossible happened. He was transferred from Central India on a deputation to Northern India in 1945 as an officer in the War Department located at Simla.
Bhutt invited Shri Nathji to live with him at Simla in 1945, but Shri Nathji preferred to stay on at Mussoorie.
In 1946 Bhutt was transferred to New Delhi from Simla. New Delhi was close to Mussoorie and Bhutt was elated. He could now go frequently to Mussoorie to be with Shri Nathji and also persuade Shri Nathji to come and live at his home at New Delhi in the winters when Shri Nathji left the hills.
For Bhutt the entire episode was a miracle. He had been a sub-judge in Raipur and his sudden transfer to the War Department at Simla had been inexplicable. It was the Divine Will of Shri Nathji that Bhutt come close to him in North India.
Time came when Bhutt’s desire to welcome Shri Nathji at his home in New Delhi was fulfilled where he had been allotted a bungalow of his own at 6/22, West Extension Area, Karol Bagh. Shri Nathji stayed at this house in March 1946, and again in December 1947.
In September 1948, Mr. and Mrs. Bhutt lost their son Jagdish, when he was still a young man. But the divine hand of Shri Nathji was so comforting that they did not feel the loss and accepted it as a measure of the Divine will.
This was the marvel of Shri Nathji’s gift of faith. People who believed in him endured the greatest of sufferings in life without a tremor, without fear, without worry or despair. And then, again, the sufferings that came upon his devotees were little as compared to the sufferings of the rest of the world.
The sufferings have come to test your faith, Shri Nathji used to say, they have come to increase your spiritual strength. Only the storm can prove the strength of the boat and the Pilot!
Later, in October 1948, Bhutt shifted to 2, Pusa Road, New Delhi, when he was made a Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Defence.
His last residence in New Delhi was at 40 Lodi Road, where he stayed for a few months from January 1952 till August 1952. It was a large bungalow with a spacious lawn.
It was thus that Delhi became an important city for Shri Nathji from 1946 onwards. His beloved devotee was there. And it was thus that Delhi became an important city for the world – for God was there. It was only befitting that God should reside in the Capital of India.
For several years after the partition of India in 1947, after Lahore had gone to Pakistan, Shri Nathji returned to Delhi again and again from Mussoorie. He would stay at the house of Mr. Bhutt.
There were times when Bhutt Sahib and his family would shift to the servant’s quarters and leave the entire house in Shri Nathji’s occupation.
For nine months of the year, Shri Nathji would remain at Mussoorie and come down to Delhi during December, January and February.
