Shri Nathji used a walking stick, as was the fashion during those days with many young men. As he walked on the Mall Road swinging the stick gently back and forth, the stick struck the leg of Istafa Khan. Shri Nathji, who was the living epitome of politeness and culture, stopped immediately and expressed great concern to Istafa Khan, saying:
Lagi to naheen? I hope it did not hurt you?
Istafa responded by saying, Huzoor issee ummeed men to saath chaltaa hoon ke kabhi ek lagaa den!
“Sir, I walk by your side in the expectation that you will favour me with a touch of your stick!
Indeed fortunate was the man who was eager to receive divine chastisement. It washed away his sins.
