There was a certain Shri Mela Ram Saran Das, famed industrialist of Lahore, who travelled all the way to Lucknow to meet R.R. Khanna. He had been surprised at the sudden conversion of this Ek sau ek darge Angrez – a hundred and one per cent Englishman, as he referred to him.
At Khanna’s house, he had to wait outside for a long time. Khanna emerged finally and greeted him.
Where were you all this time? Shri Mela Ram Saran Das asked him.
I was with Shri Nathji, said Khanna, who had emerged from meditating upon his master.
How fortunate! Is he here with you? said Shri Mela Ram Saran Das.
“No,” said Khanna, “he is in Lahore! But no matter where he may be, I always feel his presence here. He is near me, even when he is very far!”
Shri Mela Ram Saran Das returned to Lahore at once, and came to Shri Nathji: Huzoor, shower your grace upon me as well, he said, give me that which you have given Khanna!
Khanna used to say: It is impossible for me to meditate unless I have Shri Nathji’s image in my mind. It acts like a telephone that connects me to a higher world.
