Shri Nathji’s spiritual work continued unabated, and his birthday was celebrated by Mateshwari on the 23rd of June 1943, at Savoy Hotel Mussoorie.
A photograph of the time shows Shri Nathji in the midst of the select gentry of Mussoorie, sitting in the hotel ballroom, his arm in a sling, and Mateshwari by his side.
In the photograph, there are Chaudhri Hyder Hussein and Jagdish, and Sardar Basant Singh amongst a host of others. Shri Nathji’s children, Pran Nath and Priya Nath, are in the arms of Sardar Basant Singh and Jagdish.
Shri Nathji’s voice carried its usual thunder on that day, despite the pain in his arm, and he filled the hearts of his listeners with ineffable peace and bliss.
Even though the doctors had given a grave and dreadful prognosis about Shri Nathji’s arm, and, indeed, about his life itself, here was Shri Nathji beaming out rays divine to the world, smiling with great benevolence and speaking as if he were in perfect health. He looked majestic in his dark blue achkan and orange turban and white chooridars, with black well-polished shoes.
Indeed those were trying times for Mateshwari who was caring for both her children while looking after Shri Nathji all the time.
Mussoorie was a lonely place once the month of June had come and gone, and the visitors from the plains had returned. The rains and the cold were severe.
There were frequent dangerous fevers that developed because of the virulent affliction in Shri Nathji’s arm. The doctors of Mussoorie had little medicines to offer and stood by helplessly. Any other person in such a situation would have gone into a state of panic and depression, but not so Shri Nathji. He wrote a letter with his left hand to a devotee, in which he said:
“If I have to do more work in this world, then I shall surely recover.”
