Priya Nath’s left eye begins to twitch. He had observed that some ill luck invariably came their way whenever his left-eye twitched. Shri Nathji, too, believed in the ill luck that a twitching left eye brought. And invariably ill-luck strikes the house–on the morning of October 5 itself.“Subah to praanon ki rakshaa ho gayi, bahut “My life was saved in the morning. It was very severe – the stoppage of the breath!”Shri Nathji had not had such a bout of suffocation ever since December 1987 when the X-Rays at Batra Hospital had revealed water in the left lung due to left ventricular failure of the heart. “You are God! Why must you impose such physical suffering upon your body! You can cure yourself in a moment–I know! But why don’t you? Can’t you see how much torment I have to endure seeing you suffer thus? No one else is watching this ‘manushya leela’ of yours! So–of what use, showing it to me and performing it for my sake?”Shri Nathji soothes Priya Nath by telling him how Lord Rama suffered, and how Laxman suffered even more than him in the forests, and of the agony of Christ’s mother when he was crucified before her. “Soye naheen?“Haven’t you gone to sleep as yet?”Priya Nath weeps in repentance at his outburst at Shri Nathji and vows, never, never again to argue with Him–a vow he can never keep. He attributes this impertinent attitude to his convent education. Shri Nathji often had to say:“Main kabhee Babaji ke aage naheen bolaa!“I never spoke in front of Babaji!”Priya Nath feels that the constant pressure of the litigation and the threat of eviction, is destroying his calm, and he is becoming incapable of looking after Shri Nathji’s health–blaming Shri Nathji for being ill, and straining his health further.“When are you going to stop the cough? The entire house is vibrating with it! Saaraa ghar goonj rahaa hai!“Larrte kahaan ho! Itnaa to meraa khyaal rakhte hoIndeed it was the greatness and love of Shri Nathji that he never even once had a harsh word for Priya Nath, nor did he blame him for taxing his health with his panic attacks.
