There was Shri Nathji’s parable on the Mahatma and the King. The day came when both of them died. The mahatma found himself in hell while the king found himself in heaven. Both of them were surprised at what had happened.“God said: “The mahatma said again: “And God said: “Yehi to kami thhee jo too kaih rahaa hai ke koyi kami naheen thhee!“This was the shortcoming–that you are saying that there was no shortcoming!”Unknown even to the mahatma, pride had entered into him. It was his ego that was asserting itself that it was good.“O king! Unknown even to you, you had committed a good act once. There was a time when your lighted procession was passing along a road. Sitting by the side of the road was a very poor boy who had to study for his examination which was the next day. He had no light in his house. As your procession passed by, he saw his opportunity and began studying in the lights. He passed in his examination the next day. For that good act you have been granted heaven!”The king said: “But O Lord, I would have merited heaven if I had performed the good act consciously. I was not even aware of the fact that I had helped the boy!”And God said: “Hat pare! Ham to kripaa kaa bahaanaa dhoondte hain!“Do not argue! All I seek is an excuse to give my Grace!”The mahatma with his pride of self-righteousness had fallen in the eyes of God, while the king with his confession of sinfulness had obtained the Divine Grace of God.
