His birthday was celebrated on June 23, 1944, at Savoy Hotel once again by Mateshwari, who announced a Tea Party there in her invitation cards, in addition to Shri Nathji’s sermon.
Shri Nathji had a Radio made by the famous foreign company PYE and he listened to the news and whatever music came on it, frequently. The radio license had to be renewed every year. Shri Nathji had got the renewal done last at Naini Tal even when he was very ill there in July 1942. And in 1944, the renewal was done at the address of Band House, Camel’s Back Road, Mussoorie.
Shri Nathji was very punctilious about observing all government rules and regulations. He would always say to people:
“Koyi cheez kanoon ke kilaaf naheen karni chaahiye. Never do anything that goes against the law of the land.”
He would attend to the renewal of the radio license with great punctuality, as indeed to all legal matters that required prompt attention.
By now the people of Mussoorie had become accustomed to the divine personality of Shri Nathji living in the midst of them like any other man with a family.
It was a common sight to see Shri Nathji walking on the Mall Road with Mateshwari and the two children, and entering into toy shops to buy toys for them.
Shri Nathji stayed on at Mussoorie till the onset of winter, and then in November 1944 went to Lahore at the insistence of Lala Hargopal Khanna, Mateshwari’s father, who was living there at 166, Anarkali.
Lala Hargopal Khanna had been deeply pained at the illness Shri Nathji had taken upon himself in his right arm and would say with great concern to Shri Nathji:
“Nathji, if anything happens to you, the loss to the world will be secondary. Remember nothing will remain of us! Nathji agar aapko kuchh ho gayaa to hamaara kuchh bhee naheen rahegaa!”
Shri Nathji recollected the time when Shri Babaji Maharaj had left his physical frame at Lahore on the 13th of December 1940.
Shri Nathji had said: “This is a great loss to the world.” Sahadeva Tayal who was with Shri Nathji at the time had added: “Huzoor, it is certainly a loss to the world – but the greatest loss has been yours! Sab se barraa nuksaan to aapkaa huaa hai!”
Shri Nathji also used to recollect how R.R. Khanna had said to Shri Nathji at that time: “If only Shri Babaji Maharaj had been better looked after, he would still have been with us today.”
Mateshwari recollected these words and events and was greatly concerned for Shri Nathji and urged him to stay with Lala Hargopal at Lahore. As it was, every winter Shri Nathji had to seek for a place to stay after his sojourn at Mussoorie, since he could no longer return to his home at Dehra Dun due to the vitiated atmosphere there.
Shri Nathji had been loathe to stay with Lala Hargopal at Lahore because he was, in worldly terms, the son-in-law of Hargopal, and propriety demanded that he stay elsewhere. However, Lala Hargopal would not hear of it and reminded Shri Nathji that not only was he Shri Nathji’s father-in-law but he was his devotee as well, and he could invite Shri Nathji to stay at his home as a devotee would. Shri Nathji was so bound by the force of Lala Hargopal’s love that he had to go to Lahore.
Shri Nathji would always bend low before Lala Hargopal and touch his feet, like any young son-in-law would be expected to do. Lala Hargopal would always protest at this and ask Shri Nathji never to do it again, saying:
“Nathji! Mujh par paap charrhaate ho! Nathji, it is a sin if I allow you to touch my feet. I have such abject reverence for you! On the spiritual plane I am your devotee!”
There were even times when Lala Hargopal would refer to Mateshwari as “Mataji” – a term of reverence meant for respected ladies. This was so, because on the spiritual plane Mateshwari was the Divine Mother of all.
