A certain Shri Uppal comes for Shri Nathji’s darshan and tells him of a certain devotee of Shri Nathji at Lahore, Roshan Lal, by name, who had later taken upon himself the name of ‘Shri Nathji’ and had become a very famous person. “Hamsaa na hogaa chalne men koyi gaafil barrhkar,“There can be no one as innocent as I,Shri Nathji was above desires. He wanted neither wealth nor fame nor followers. He did not wish to build up a vast organization and be recognized by all as a great spiritual luminary of his times. He was content with the quiet life he was leading with Priya Nath in their modest-sized, rented bungalow at Delhi.“When mahatmas are engrossed in collecting lakhs of followers, I am content with having just one man before me!”There was his verse:“Chhorro mujhe bekhud meraa aaraam yehi hai“Leave me alone in my self-forgetfulness, that is my only rest,Shri Nathji had said time and again:“If a mahatma boasts of his spiritual status on the strength of the number of followers that he has, then ask him what will be his status if they all leave him one day!“Jiss mahatma men ek bhee shishya banaane ki ichhaa baaki raih jaati hai vo mahatma Bhagwan ki nazaron se gir jaataa hai!“If a mahatma has the desire to make even one follower, then he has fallen in the eyes of God!–for the condition is that a mahatma must have a desire for no one except God!”There was the Persian verse that Shri Nathji often quoted:“Khilaafe tareekat bavad auliyaaIt is against the Nature of Saints,Shri Nathji had also said:“Main un mahatmas ko“I warn those mahatmas who want people to bow before them that they must learn to bow before others! I have prostrated, once and for all, before everyone!”“Jo mahatma apne shishya men Bhagwan ko dekhkar usse pranaam naheen kar saktaa, vo mahatma mahatma kaihlaane laayak naheen hai!“A mahatma who cannot see God in his disciple and will not touch his feet, is not worthy to be called a mahatma!”How different Shri Nathji and Shri Babaji Bhagwan and Priya Nath were from these mahatmas who embarked upon the path of self-glorification, name, fame, wealth and followers.
