On September 12, 1981, Shri Nathji was seen dancing in the drawing room of the house, bare-headed, dressed in his white shirt and white pyjamas, the catheter bag in his hand, even as the tape recorder played Shri Nathji’s ghazal sung by Priya Nath:Fanaa se dar kar bakaa ko dhoondaaFearful of Death, a quest was made for Eternal Life “Shamaa jalee to jalee hui thhee bujhee bhiThe Flame burnt and remained in burning, and was there, even when it died,Fanaa ki hasti se sab dare hain, usse to apnaa pataa naheen haiThe Existence of Death is fearsome, but Death knows not of itself,Fanaa ko kaihnaa fanaa kahaan hai Bakaa men khud hai dikhaanaa uskoTo ask Death about Death is to see it in Eternal Life itselfThese verses which had been printed in Shri Nathji’s booklet: ““Mazaa hasti kaa letaa hoon gulo bulbul judaa banker“I take the joy of existence as the flower and the nightingale,Death was the interplay of immortality with itself. It was the changing of one immortal shape to another. As Shri Nathji used to say:“MAUT MERE SAAMNE KAAMPTI HAI! “ DEATH TREMBLES BEFORE ME!”“A child cries when his clothes are changed, but a grown-up can change his clothes at will. Death cannot come to me unless I will it. Death is my own creation.“Maut meri pyaari vastu hai main usse aane doonga.“Death is my own beloved creation,But Shri Nathji had also warned Death that it could not come against his wishes:“Maut ko maut na aa jaayegi agar meraa kasad kar ke aaye?“Will death not come to death itself, if it resolves to come against me?”And here was Shri Nathji in September 1981 dancing at the thought of Death, seeing immortality in Death, and Death in immortality itself. It was the Lord God of Creation dancing at the thought of his own plaything–Death.
