Priya Nath recounted the meeting of Shri Nathji with Rai Bahadur Sant Ram Grover, Chief Engineer, at Lahore–which Shri Nathji was very fond of narrating in his sermons.“Shri Nathji, tell me of some easy way to reach God.”“Bhagwan se milne kaa koyi saral saa raastaa bataayen!”Shri Nathji was amused, and said:“Sant Ramji, perhaps that is why you took me for a drive in your car!”Shri Nathji continued:“Sant Ramji, how long did it take you to become a Chief Engineer?” Sant Ramji replied:“Oh, almost my entire lifetime, say about 35 years. I am on the verge of retirement now.”Shri Nathji said:“Sant Ramji, it took you almost your entire lifetime to reach the status of a Chief Engineer – and you want to know how to reach God during this brief drive in the car?“Sant Ramji aapkoThe Chief Engineer was taken aback and realised his folly. However, he requested Shri Nathji to say something on the theme.“Usskaa darvaazaa khat khataayaa karen!“Go and knock at His door!”The Chief Engineer then asked:“Sir, the door is locked from inside. Will the door ever open or will the person knocking have to go on knocking forever?“Huzoor, darvaazaa to andar se band hai na! Kyaa darvaazaa khat-khataane vaalaa darvaazaa khat-khataataa hee jaataa hai yaa darvaazaa kabhi khultaa bhee hai!”Shri Nathji laughed and said:“Chief Engineer Sahib! I begin to doubt now whether you are a Chief Engineer or not!“Sant Ramji ab to muje shak ho rahaa hai ke aapSant Ram said:“Maharaj, what has engineering got to do with it?”And Shri Nathji replied:“Agar darvaaze ne na khulna hotaa to vahaan deevaar bani hoti.“If the door were never to open there would have been a wall in its place!”“Go on knocking. It will open, since it has opened for others who have knocked. Sit at His doorstep and don’t let Him come out, if He does not let you come in!”There was Shri Nathji’s Urdu Verse:“Mujhe dar par too apne hi raihne deLet me remain at Thy Door,There was also the verse of Ghalib that Shri Nathji was very fond of quoting:“Jee men ye hai ke dar pe kissee ke parre rahen“My heart yearns to remain at the door of SomeoneShri Nathji offered hope to all of humanity. Prayer was the only way – the knocking at His door.
