Vidyawati, Mateshwari’s elder sister had a faith in Shri Nathji to equal that of her brothers and sisters and looked upon Shri Nathji as God Incarnate.
Whenever she was in any trouble in life she prayed to him and her trouble was removed in a miraculous manner.
Once a distant relation said to her: It is unfortunate that there is no Minister of the government who is our relative, or else we could have derived many benefits.
Vidyawati replied: True we do not have any Minister as our relative–but we have Shri Nathji as out relative, who has made these ministers! Ministron kaa banaane vaalaa to hamaaraa rishtedaar hai!
Vidya would very zealously prepare an achkan for Shri Nathji on his birthdays, and insist that he wear the new achkan on that day, which Shri Nathji did punctiliously in keeping with the wishes of Vidya.
Although Mateshwari always said that her sisters envied her and were even inwardly jealous of her, which was a normal human feeling amongst relatives, yet there was no doubt about their sincerity or devotion towards Shri Nathji.
Shri Nathji would recollect with humour how Vidya’s husband, Gopaldas Malhotra, would sometimes assert his own superiority as the senior son-in-law of Lala Hargopal, and brusquely brush past Shri Nathji up the stairs to Lala Hargopal’s house at 133 Anarkali, Lahore. But even those relatives who were not granted intense faith and devotion still had a great respect for Shri Nathji and were proud to proclaim their relationship with him.
One of the elder brothers of Savitri Devi, Shri Bal Krishen Khanna, had been a disbeliever to start with, and seldom came for Shri Nathji’s darshan during the earlier days before Shri Nathji’s marriage. As a matter of fact, he had been tardy in coming to the engagement ceremony of Savitri Devi prior to the marriage. Shri Babaji Maharaj, who knew of the best of worldly etiquettes, had immediately halted the ceremony, and allowed it to resume only after Bal Krishen had come.
When Bal Krishen saw the remarkable impact that Shri Nathji was making on the minds of people, he was humbled. Here were people from all walks of life, High Court Judges, lawyers, intellectuals, rajas and maharajas, nawabs, and ministers of the government, all coming for Shri Nathji’s darshan and seeing the holiest of the holy in him.
Shri Nathji would never accept any favours from the high and the mighty, the rich or the powerful. He had come to give, and not to take anything from anyone. If these people were great in terms of worldly status, Shri Nathji was the greatest one of them all, who had given them that status. These big persons were merely like decorations in the darbaar of Shri Nathji and he would never take any service from them. This had lead Shri Babaji Maharaj to say to him jokingly:
Nathji, inn barre logon ko achaar daalne ke liye rakhaa huyaa hai? Have you kept these big persons with yourself merely to make pickles out of them? Why don’t you take some work from them!
Bal Krishen had wished to rise in his career, but knew that despite his academic record, he had little chances in the world of competition and influence around him. He had seen the Education Minister, Sir Sikander Hayat Khan, visiting Shri Nathji with great respect, with a bouquet of flowers in his hand, at Lahore. And he had made a humble request to Mateshwari to ask Shri Nathji to intercede on his behalf.
Shri Nathji had been in a quandary. It was against his nature to ask any favours from these influential men. But here was Mateshwari’s elder brother praying for this favour from him. Therefore, for the sake of Mateshwari, Shri Nathji had agreed to broach the subject with the Education Minister. Shri Nathji had taken Bal Krishen with himself to the house of the Education Minister, and personally given his papers to the Minister. The Education Minister was ever too happy to acknowledge the credentials of Bal Krishen. As a consequence of this, Bal Krishen had secured the career of an engineer which he wanted in life, and he had remained ever grateful to Shri Nathji for it.
Shri Nathji would recall how Bal Krishen had, gratefully, carried the overcoat of Mateshwari slung across his arm while walking with them at Lahore. However, sadly, he never acquired the same faith that his brothers and sisters had in Shri Nathji. Truly had Shri Nathji said that faith was a gift from God and that man had to be worthy of it.
