Shri Nathji and Mateshwari had both seen the absolute dichotomy that accompanied the devotion of many people. While on the one hand they would express complete faith in Shri Nathji and think of him as God, on the other hand their attachment to their wealth would be so great that they would not be willing to part with even a fraction of it for God’s sake.
Shri Nathji had seen this more in the rich than in the poor, which was the main reason why he never took any service or offerings from the rich. In the eyes of Shri Nathji such rich men were really very poor.
And this, despite the fact that Shri Nathji gave them something no doctor or psychologist could have given them. He gave them peace of mind, which could not be had for all the wealth in the world; he gave them freedom from fear and worry, and an assurance of a rightful place in the world to come.
Yet they were never moved to do something for him in return for all he had done for them. Just because Shri Nathji never asked anyone to do anything for him, they never thought of their own responsibilities towards him. It was this inherent love for money and miserliness that kept people back from God. It also did not let them enjoy the world.
