Shri Nathji regarded agnostics and atheists as honest men, people who did not believe because they did not know. This was in sharp contrast to believers and religionists who believed in God in theory only, but betrayed His tenets in practice.
Shri Nathji used to say:
Think of a man all alone in a room, with only a child standing there. The man would not even think of stealing anything from the room for fear of the child bearing witness to his act.
But if no one were in the room the man might be tempted to steal. However let me ask you– even when there is no one in the room isn’t God there? Alas, this is what man forgets when he does wrong.
He fails to realise that God is forever watching his thoughts, words and deeds, and that he cannot hide anything from God. If people truly and genuinely believed in God they would never do anything wrong because of God being a witness to their actions!
Shri Nathji frequently used to say: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom!
If man were to only feel the presence of God with Him all the time he would not only cease to do any wrong, because he would know that God is watching over all his actions, but he would also cease to be afraid because he would know that the All- Powerful is with him to help him all the time.
It is only because man does not feel the presence of God with him all the time that he does wrong and also lives in fear.
Shri Nathji would say:
“God is with us all the time, but we are not with Him.”
