Shri Nathji sometimes spoke of the three flies who saw a pot of honey. The first fly plunged into the honey with greed and died inside the pot unable to extricate itself. The second fly came close to the pot and saw the fate that had befallen the first fly. In stark terror, it ran away from the pot. The third fly, however, was the wisest of all three. It understood the fate of the first fly as well as the fear of the second. And it sought a middle path.
It sat down on the edge of the pot. It ate the honey whenever it wanted to, and if flew away whenever it wanted to. It enjoyed the world and retained its freedom.
The world was like a pot of honey. There were many who became entrapped in it and perished in the clinging to material objects. There were some who renounced the world altogether and retired to forests or places of seclusion. But there was the third category of people who partook of the things the world had to offer, but who did not become attached to them. These were the ones who enjoyed the world most of all. Their hearts were ever free.
