As it had already become dark, Shri Nathji decided to break journey at Meerut. Finding a place for the night was a very difficult matter. However, Shri Nathji with his uncanny ability was able to discover Wheler Club, which was a place reserved for Army Officers and their families. The manager was so touched by Shri Nathji’s personality that he offered him a suite of two rooms for the night.
Shri Nathji liked the place so much that he decided to continue staying there for a month at least. Mateshwari and the boys were enjoying the beautiful surroundings, the well-kept lawns, the tidy club buildings, the dining hall and large ballroom, room etc.
Everything had a British flavour to it, and was spic and span. Even the food was agreeable. There was a large bathtub in the bathroom with running hot and cold water. Shri Nathji had never enjoyed the luxury of a hot water bath in a tub, nor had the children, ever since their days at Mayfair Building, Bombay.
Once in Mussoorie bathing would become a great ordeal in the cold weather, with no hot water coming from the taps. Wheler Club appeared to be a good place to recover their lost health.
