Shri Nathji would never tire of quoting Lord Tennyson’s poem: “The Charge of the Light Brigade”, in which an officer had given a wrong order under the influence of drink; and even though the six hundred soldiers under his command knew that the order was wrong, they obeyed him and plunged to their deaths.
Shri Nathji would quote Tennyson’s words with emotion as he thought of those brave men of the Army:
“Cannon to right of them
Cannon to left of them,
All in the Valley of Death
Rode the six hundred!
There is not to make reply
There is not to reason why
There is but to do and die!”
It was a measure of Shri Nathji’s love for the men of the army that, whenever he met them, his divine flow would go out towards them with great spontaneity, and they felt this divine feeling reach out to them inside their hearts.
Colonel Rai did not know who Shri Nathji was. He had mistaken him for a Maharaja.
As Shri Nathji entered Colonel Rai’s home and became his guest, the Colonel said to Shri Nathji: “Can I be permitted to ask which State you are the Maharaja of?”
Shri Nathji said: “My realm is the State of your heart!”
And, as Shri Nathji began speaking to the Colonel in a divine flow of words, the Colonel’s heart and soul were absolutely overwhelmed. He had never met anyone like Shri Nathji before in his whole life. It was as if the heavens had opened up the gates of a mighty revelation to him.
He bent down and touched Shri Nathji’s feet. Tears came into his eyes, which were tears of recognition of the individual soul, which had finally found a union with the Universal Soul.
When Mateshwari later said to him in a light vein: “Colonel Sahib you must have been very disappointed when you discovered that Shri Nathji was not a Maharaja!”
The Colonel replied: “No, Mataji, after I found out who Shri Nathji really was, I discovered that Rajas and Maharajas are very ordinary persons! Raje Maharaje to barri maamooli cheezen hote hain!”
And it was thus that Shri Nathji stayed at the house of the Colonel for several days. During these days the divine flow of Shri Nathji’s words took the Colonel to another plane altogether where space and time did not exist.
