Shri Nathji had always found the best possible places for Mateshwari and the boys to live in, and he did so again in a miraculous way. A portion of a Raja’s palace was available for rent in the cantonment area and Shri Nathji immediately took the place. There were two very large bedrooms with high ceilings and a large central hall. The hall was partitioned so that one half could be used as a drawing room and the other half as a dining room. Shri Nathji liked the place so much that he had it furnished in an ornate way. A dining table and hairs were also purchased.
Mateshwari did not like the place very much and had visions of a dreadful apparition in the hall. Priya Nath too had strange vibrations in his bedroom as if there were someone inside watching him. Once an entire rack of books and a large bedroll were flung violently down from an almirah. Bats flew around the place from the large trees and foliage outside. There was a manager of the estate who lived close by and whose nose had been cut off at some time in his life by some opponent. His presence at the place lent it an altogether ghostly appearance. There were even rumours that in the centuries past, a dancing girl had been murdered and buried underneath the palace. The palace was located in a dense undergrowth of shrubs, bushes and trees and had a long driveway leading into it. The place looked like a classic haunted house.
However for the greater part, Shri Nathji, Mateshwari, Pran Nath and Priya Nath enjoyed their new living arrangements. Mateshwari would even play badminton with Pran Nath and Priya Nath in the badminton court outside their chambers.
