Shri Nathji often sat in the verandah, which was outside his chambers in the palace. It was here that he met people and held satsangs during the warmer months.
During one of his satsangs he noticed a man being brought to him in a very ill state. He was so weak that he had to be held up by two persons. The person was dressed in a dhoti and kurta and a Gandhi cap. The man was Shri Ramesh Chandra, who had been a Chief Engineer at Assam, as also the Secretary to the Government.
Shri Nathji was speaking to a small group of devotees at the time. He changed the subject of his talk abruptly and began speaking on the subject of death, in particular, the death of a man’s wife.
As he continued to speak, Shri Ramesh Chandra found a new life entering his body. He was surprised that Shri Nathji had chosen the particular topic. His wife had died recently. The shock had been so great for him that he had fallen seriously ill. Many days had passed and he had not slept for a moment.
That night, when he returned home from Shri Nathji’s sermon, his mind was perfectly at peace within. It was as if his wife had been restored to him!
Shri Nathji could restore to the grieving their loved ones in a single glance. Grief would give way to happiness and peace as Shri Nathji brought their loved ones closer within their hearts and souls, so that they no longer felt the separation.
It was a great miracle.
No medicine on earth could cure such sorrow. Numerous were the instances when people who had lost their loved ones and who had become inconsolable, were brought to Shri Nathji, and he restored them to normal through the magic feel of his voice. The real reason for this was that Shri Nathji was the Universal Soul in whom all the souls of the world existed. Therefore whenever anyone came to Shri Nathji, he in fact found the individual soul of his beloved in Shri Nathji.
Shri Ramesh Chandra came again the next day, but this time he left his green Desoto car at home and walked.
He said later to Shri Nathji that he had been with Gandhi who used to tell him: “If you go to visit a man of God you must do so on foot! That way you will secure a greater share of his blessings.”
He became an ardent devotee of Shri Nathji and would sit at his feet for hours together while Shri Nathji poured out his soul into him. He recovered rapidly from his illness. A spiritual glow came over his face–the glow of health of a young man.
He was a very learned man, well versed in the scriptures, and was a member of the Arya Samaj. Shri Nathji appeared to him in the guise of his own faith. He began to call Shri Nathji: “Gurudeva” and would sit before him for hours almost daily, when Shri Nathji would pour out his heart’s blessings into him.
He was struck by the irrefutable logic that Shri Nathji used to explain spiritual truths. Being a great intellectual he had never been drawn to holy men and mahatmas who spoke in terms of legends and blind faith. Shri Nathji’s perfect reasoning power astonished him beyond measure. Also there was the Divine Glow on Shri Nathji’s face and the feeling of ineffable love, peace and bliss that he exuded, which affected all those around him and which had become a part of Ramesh Chander.
Although Ramesh Chander did not think in terms of avatars–being an Arya Samaji–yet Shri Nathji was everything for him, because he had given him a new life in one moment. His friends and relatives were surprised to see this change come over him. He had risen from his deathbed to become a fully active, energised young man, even though he was in his late fifties.
Shri Nathji had often said:
“Speaking is the smallest of my tasks. Whatever I have to give, I give directly from within!
“Bolnaa to meraa sab se chhotaa kaam hai! Main ne jo kuchh denaa hai andar se hee de detaa hoon!”
There was a time, three years later, when he was sweeping the verandah of Shri Nathji’s house with a ‘jharoo’–broom. And Shri Nathji said to him half-humorously:
Chief Engineer Sahib! I hope this sweeping is not filling you with pride – that a Chief Engineer of your status is performing such a task!
“Kaheen pride to naheen aa gayi ke main Chief Engineer hokar jhaarru lagaa rahaa hoon!”
And Shri Nathji continued:
“I have been sweeping your heart for the past three years now!”
“Mujhe teen saal ho gaye hain aapke dil men jhaarru lagaate!”
